Town went out of the FA Cup in disappointing fashion albeit with plenty of effort, against a well-organised Southampton side in a game televised by BBC.
Town started brightly, Stephen Hunt putting the ball in the back of the net in the fiifth minute but narrowly ajudged to have been offside. Southampton then went ahead with virtually their first attack, Tommy Smith producing a fine saving tackle to prevent Ward-Prowse but inadvertantly setting up Shane Long who produced an instinctive finish.
Town huffed and puffed in the second half but produced only one effort on target; a Darren Ambrose header straight at the keeper after good work by Tyrone Mings down the left.
