The 2013-14 season was Town's twelfth consecutive season in the second tier of English football. Town finished a respectable ninth in the league in Mick McCarthy's first full season in charge, their highest position for five seasons. They briefly flirted with the play-offs but eventually finished in ninth place; three places and four points outside.

In the domestic cups Town did not fare so well, being knocked out at the first hurdle by lower league opposition in both the League and FA Cup, by Stevenage and Preston North End respectively.

League table[]

Leicester City were run-away champions, automatically promoted with Burnley, many pundits favourites for relegation pre-season. Queens Park Rangers were also promoted via the play-offs.

At the other end of the table, Yeovil Town were relegated in their first season in tier two. They were joined by Barnsley and Doncaster Rovers; a last-minute equaliser keeping Birmingham City up.
